A pair of renowned Norwegian fish farming companies have teamed up with the research institute SINTEF Ocean to create a unique aquaculture farm dedicated to using salmon waste to improve salmon growth and health. kelp
This experimental aquaculture farm located in Norland county is designed to grow salmon and seaweed in close proximity. The benefit of this particular setup is that the faeces and waste produced by the salmon will be available to the algae, whereby nutrient uptake will help the algae grow faster and healthier. Not only will kelp be available for use to boost nutrients in cattle feed, but some of its by-products could actually be used in salmon feed, creating a win-win deal.
