Reckitt, a major US formula manufacturer, said Monday it is recalling two batches of Enfamil ProSobee Simply Plant-Based infant formula due to potential cross-contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.
review The company says it is being done as a precautionary measure as the product tested negative for bacteria and no illnesses have been reported.
Reckitt is recalling approximately 145,000 12.9-ounce cans of blend produced between August and September and distributed to stores in the US, Guam and Puerto Rico. They have an expiration date of March 1, 2024 at the bottom along with the codes ZL2HZF or ZL2HZZ.
Consumers must discard these products or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. No other ProSobee or Reckitt products are affected.
The company states that the cause of the problem “was related to material from a third party” and that it took “all necessary corrective actions, including no longer receiving this material from the supplier.”
Cronobacter was behind the Abbott Nutrition formula recall last year, exacerbating the nationwide shortage. Cronobacter infections are rare, but they can be serious and even fatal, especially in newborns. Bacteria live in the environment, but infections in infants are often associated with powder formulas.
The US Food and Drug Administration has received reports of four Cronobacter diseases and two deaths in three states last year. All infants consumed powdered formula produced at Abbott’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan. The Food and Drug Administration identified Cronobacter in the plant, but genetic testing failed to detect it in sick children.
After the recall and shortage, the FDA stated that it work on the plan strengthen surveillance of infant formula for Cronobacter.
